A 65-year-old woman was killed by a shark on Wednesday while swimming around the shore in Maui, Hawaii. According to the Maui Fire Department, she was discovered nearly 200 yards from the shoreline, where EMTs tried to revive her.
The attack occurred in the Kanahena Cove area of Ahihi-Kinau Natural Area Reserve. According to EMT officials, the woman’s body possessed various bite marks on her torso. No witnesses were present during the incident, but the attack is thought to have occurred around 9:00 AM, while the woman was snorkeling. She and two friends were traveling in the area, but the victim most likely separated from her companions. The shark attack is now being investigated.
Details Of The Shark Attack In Hawaii
This is not the first incidence of a shark attack in Hawaii. There have been at least three others similar incidences documented in the past 10 years by Hawaiian officials; this is also the third time a shark has actually killed its victim since 2013. In 2004, for example, a surfer was killed on a beach in Maui, Hawaii. Then in December 2013, Patrick Briney of Washington, 57-years old, passed away when a shark bit him in the right leg as he was kayaking, causing him to bleed to death. Earlier that year, a German woman also faced the same fate after a shark bit off her arm when she was swimming at Palauea Beach. This is the same area of this latest shark attack.
Unfortunately, it is a popular travel spot for tourists. The beaches from La Perouse Bay to Big Beach, as well as Makena and at Kihei were closed after the body was retrieved and no swimmers, divers or other water activities are allowed until possibly Thursday afternoon. In the meantime, the area will be thoroughly searched on Thursday to see if there is any more evidence of sharks along the beach.
