Google rolled out its first router earlier in August, and it’s about to release the second generation of the OnHub. This latest installment comes with a nifty feature that sets it apart from the rest: by waving your hand over the top of the Asus OnHub, you can boost the Wi-Fi speed of any of your devices.
Wave for Fast Wifi, And No Blinking Lights
According to the blog post announcing the news, Google says that the company wanted to design a router that’s more appealing to the eye than the customary box-with-an-upright-antenna that we see everywhere. The new OnHub is cylindrical, and has all antennas in-house. Google assures that these antennas are more compact and powerful than ones in other routers and give users steady and fast Wi-Fi anywhere in the space where it is located. In fact, according to PCMag, one of these antennas works only to find the least congested Wi-Fi channel available.
No more blinking lights for Google routers, either, because any kind of troubleshooting can be done directly from the Google On app. The app can also be used for setup, to view how many devices are currently connected, and how much wireless capacity each device is consuming.
Trond Wuellner, group product manager for the OnHub, wrote in a blog post that these routers are designed to stay fresh and get better with time. Phone in the kitchen and laptop in the living room? Wuellner comments that the OnHub will choose the best combination of antennas to direct Wi-Fi to the devices based on location and orientation. The best part, the announcement reads, is that the router updates automatically when the network is idle so as to not interrupt connection.
Google Asus OnHub Hits Stores This Week, and TP-LINK Gets an Upgrade
The OnHub, made by ASUSTeK Computer Inc., a Taiwanese multinational computer hardware and electronics company with HQ in Taipei, Taiwan, is set to hit the market starting this week at $219.99 in slate gray. Google’s first OnHub, the TP-LINK, is also available in black and blue for $199.99.
The first OnHub router, the TP-LINK, will be getting its first software update after its inception in upcoming weeks, including a new smart antenna algorithm.
