Fashion for the Final Frontier

When it comes to fashion, we think of New York Fashion Week or all of the newest and trendiest designer names and brands. Rarely, however, do we consider space suits to be a form of fashion. However, in Brooklyn, this is exactly what a Russian engineer and an American artist are attempting to do through their new company, known as Final Frontier Design.

The idea is to make space suits more stylish and not simply the bulky, unattractive outerwear they are perceived as. The concept behind this is also more geared towards future space events, where regular people can pay to go into space. While professional astronauts will need the ability to use suits known as EVA suits, which are specifically for maneuvering successfully outside of the spaceship, passengers who would not be setting foot outside would only need to have access to what are known as IVA suits, which are particularly designed for internal use.

There is much talk about a significant rise in people being able to visit and see space. It is projected that in 2017, there will be the first private spacecraft available for people who want to see the great beyond. If these go well, we could very easily see more companies joining in and more people being in orbit.

Because of this new information and the knowledge that we now have, it makes all the sense in the world for business owners to start taking advantage of this budding market. Since space travel has moved out of the military and scientific exploration realms a bit, it has become more part of a commercial event for those who have always wanted to see space and still be safe. The idea is that suits provided to passengers be as stylish as possible, but also provide them with the pressurized environment that they will need on their voyage.

As far as history goes, space suits and fashion actually go back a good ways. The fashion industry collided with the spaceflight industry once astronauts were beginning to go into space and they needed to have something to wear. From the clunky, oversized space suits, to the unique staple orange suits that were provided to NASA, as well as the first space suits that were provided by Playtex, there have been many interactions between the two worlds.

With the ability for the public to actually travel into space becoming closer and closer to reality, this is a great way to step in early and have a unique approach. There is an allure here for people that would have never had the chance to go out of our orbit to now see space in all its glory.

The unique opportunity that businesses have, such as Final Frontier Design, is to appeal to a new market that has not even been seen before – the market of the space travel consumer. This is a completely new realm to expand into and will undoubtedly continue to grow as time and technology progress.
